Abstract
:
The main purpose of this project is to develop a comprehensive and effective fitness program that can be delivered in a confined area with minimal equipment to adults with intellectual disabilities (ID). This fitness program is targeted for eventual use in Day Activity Centres (DAC), Hostels, and Workshops taking in persons with ID. However, in the process of developing this fitness program, several additional outcomes can also be achieved. Firstly, as the fitness program will undergo a series of pilot runs and validation process in DAC/Hostels/Workshops, the centre staff will receive direct training on how to deliver some of the activities and ultimately, the entire program in their centre. Secondly, through engaging members of the DAC/Hostels/Workshops, namely adults with ID, in the pilot runs and validation process, their personal fitness level and their health in general will be enhanced. Thirdly, upon the identification of a comprehensive and effective, viz-a-viz, "best practice" fitness program, a DVD capturing a demonstration of activities incorporated in this fitness program will be made available for sharing among agencies serving persons with ID. Lastly, as a finale to the project, a seminar will be staged to introduce the project and its outcomes to carers of agencies serving persons with ID and the public, and hence, the message will reach beyond those initially involved in the project.
